Fine landscape painting by Daniel Sherrin depicting gateway to a country house
Gateway to a Country House is a fine example of the landscape painting of David Sherrin (1868-1940) depicting an atmospheric scene of a pillared gateway to centre with flanking rhododendrons and azaleas to foreground. Leading into a density of woodland, the final denouement of the country house is denied, characteristic of aesthetic representation in the country house tradition.
Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentford, Essex. Moving to Ramsgate as a child, he later lived in Seasalter near Whitstable where he died. His early work comprises seascapes and sailing ships in the manner of T.J. Somerscales and Montague Dawson, later turning to landscapes after B.W. Leader, oft cited as the Garden of England style.
A picture of Sandringham was commissioned from him by King George V and is held in the Buckingham Palace collection. His paintings were used for book illustrations and engravings, In the Highlands illustrating British Highways and Byways by Thomas D. Murphy published in 1908. The Imperial War Museum in London also holds work by Sherrin on the design of recruitment posters for the First World War, one poster citing comment from Lord Kitchener.
Oil on canvas, with gilded frame.
