Dumfries from the Dock J.E. 1777. Etching

CLARK, JOHN, OF ELDIN (SCOTTISH 1728-1812). JOHN CLERK OF ELDIN. DUMFRIES FROM THE DOCK. INSCRIBED DUMFRIES FROM THE DOCK J.E. 1777. ETCHING.

Of Scottish Interest. An early edition of this etching, possibly first. Black edition, state II/III, in Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow, colour edition in Dumfries Museum. John Clerk of Eldin had a walk-on part in the Scottish Enlightenment. Brother-in-law of Robert Adam. Association with Dumcrieff House, Moffat. Volume of his sketches presented to George III in 1786. Seen as a precursor to the etching revival of the mid-nineteenth century.
